WHAT IS IMPROV?

So, exactly what is improvisation? Improvisation is one of the core techniques used by actors. It stretches the imagination, sparks spontaneity and can lead to unforgettable performances. To the dismay of script writers everywhere, it has also been responsible for some of the best moments in cinema history! Jack Nicholson’s line, “Heeeeeere's Johnny,” in 'The Shining'? Improvised! Improv comes in many forms and these mainly fit into two categories 'Short Form' and Long Form'. Improv can be comedic, dramatic, narrative and so much more. Many people use improv to improve their confidence, to develop their public speaking skills, to work on character development and the list of how to apply improv techniques is most probably endless. For me it is the best way to express yourself as well as being a place I can lean into my humour and generally just have a lot of fun.

MY IMPROV JOURNEY

I am an experienced teacher and improv facilitator with nearly 20 years experience of guiding and helping to shape the minds of performers from age 6 to 60+.

After discovering a passion for improv as a 6 year old when attending my local drama class, I have been developing as an improviser ever since and after 20 years of writing, producing and directing youth stage productions using improv techniques to help performers develop their character, I finally stumbled upon a local adult improv class run by Emma Bird of Liverpool Comedy Improv and it totally changed my life! It unleashed the performer in me again and I started to trasnsition out of the full time teacher mindset and back into performer mode. It led me to joining forces with some of the most wonderful people I have ever met to create the improv troupe 'The Oickers' who I perform with regulalry, and to forming a local improv community in North Wales called 'Flintshire Funnybone Improv' where I facillitate free bi weekly short form improv drop in sessions. I am also a facillitator for Glossop Improv and help to deliver bi weekly online improv drop in sessions every other Friday. My Fiancée Sekki and I also work as promoters and run improv shows out of a couple of different venues. Improv truly is a massive part of my life and it is how I met my wonderful fiancee. I love it so much that I started a podcast all about it in 2021 called the 'Liverpool Comedy ImprovCast' and that is still going strong, with a new episode dropping every other Monday.
